The local YMCA of coastal Georgia has four programs to help develop skills in kids during the school year and summer.

  • EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP

  • All kids have great potential. At the Y, a leading nonprofit strengthening community through youth development, we work every day to help them set and achieve their personal and educational goals. As a result, millions of children and teens nationwide gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. Additionally, through our leadership and academic enrichment programs such as mentoring, Youth and Government and college preparation, the Y makes sure that every child has an opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening his or her community.
  • Y READERS

  • Through Y Readers, our free after school literacy program, the Y serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. This program is currently offered at five Chatham County public schools located in deep pockets of poverty in the community. Working with a certified teacher three hours, twice a week, students in the program are provided with the skills and confidence they need to read at grade level and discover their true potential.
  • EARLY LEARNING READINESS (ELR)

  • The ELR Program provides tools to Hispanic/Latino caregivers, which can be defined as a  mother, father, aunt, uncle, or neighbor, to help them prepare children in their care ages 0-5 to enter and succeed in  a school environment. The ELR program provides a stimulating environment in which children can learn through play while developing physical abilities, as well as verbal and social skills that are necessary to start school. This mobile program currently serves five sites, please see attached flyer for detail location sites.
  • POWER SCHOLARS ACADEMY

  • Power Scholars AcademyTM is a partnership between the Y and the national nonprofit BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), a six-week summer program designed to not only tackle summer learning loss in math and reading, but to also foster physical and social-emotional growth. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia is excited to introduce this program in 2016 to middle school students in Effingham County Schools.
Besides these programs the YMCA offers a family friendly environment and good local resources. At the front desk, the YMCA has fliers with group activities and like swimming, sports, play and rotational summer camps. They offer daycare as well.

How to sign up to be a mentor for Youth Intercept Program

If you would like to become a mentor call Sheryl Sams at (912) 414-8844 or (912) 350-0231.

The county’s Young Intercept Programs seeks to curve violence by meeting victims and offenders where they are at in order to prevent retaliation and seek young people up for a better life.

“We’ve seen kids who are first in their family to graduate high school, go to college get a degree, and have jobs  and that’s what we want. We want them to live in this community and be law-abiding citizens and thrive,” Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap said.

Our Mission

For generations to come, your family’s success will depend upon the success of your children. If they do not enter the world and work-force fully equipped with the tools they will need to suc-ceed, they are starting at a disadvantage.

A major focus of The Advancement Center is to help youths succeed by building stronger academic, behavior, business, career and life skills
