A sign in the window shortly after the Red Vic closed down. Photo July 2011.The Red Vic Movie House was an employee-owned and operated co-op cinema located in the Haight. They had lots of neat things other places don't have, like comfy couches and real buttered popcorn. They had video, 16 mm and 35 mm projection, and Dolby stereo. They closed their doors on July 25th, 2011, after 31 years in business.
Their food selection was interesting: you coul get things like nutritional yeast on your popcorn, organic (home-made?) food, and they used real bowls rather than throw-away paper or plasic things. Also, they didn't torture you with loud non-trailer commercials before your movie.
They opened up on July 25, 1980 when a group of movie-loving friends decided to collectively start and run their own theater. The Red Vic was originally located at the corner of Haight and Belvedere streets, but moved in-between Cole and Schrader on Haight in 1991.
