Don Mills is probably best known as North America's first fully planned post-war (the second one) community. It was financed and built privately, quite literally paving the way for a new suburban development style echoed in Toronto and other North American neighbourhoods.

The layout of Don Mills is based primarily on Ebenezer Howard's Garden City. The design attempted to embody new planning principles never before seen in Canada - 1. The neighbourhood principle, by which the development is carved into 4 quadrants radiating out from the intersection of Don Mills Rd. and Lawrence Ave E. Each quadrant includes a school, a church, and a designated green space. 2. Separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, by which the roads are layed out to deliberately slow vehicular traffic using T junctions, cul de sacs and long winding roads, but pathways for pedestrians cut through the neighbourhood, linking quadrants to the retail/commerical centre and to each other.
