"Old Toronto" is the area of the City that was known as the City of Toronto prior to the amalgamation that occured on January 1, 1998. This amalgamation of the 6 former municipalities of Metro Toronto was imposed by the Provincial government. This area is also sometimes referred to as downtown Toronto
The "New" City of Toronto includes the Old City of Toronto as well as the former municipalities of North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, York, and the Borough of East York.
