ComedySportz is an improvisational comedy played as a sport in many cities nationwide, and in the UK, by members of the World Comedy League. Two teams battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes, games and songs on the spot. The audience votes for the winners, a referee calls the fouls and they even play the national anthem before each match.
Local to the Twin Cities is Comedy Sportz Twin Cities. The group performs in Calhoun Square in Uptown regularly on Thursdays at 8:00pm, and on Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm and 10:30pm. Shows are typically $12; however, students can receive a $2 discount on Thursdays and during the 10:30pm shows with their student id.
Two teams, the St. Paul Fire and the Minneapolis Ice, compete against each other for points in various improvisational games. Audience participation is an important part of the show, typically centered around having members of the audience pick topics for the next game and voting for the winner. A referee helps moderate the game. Comedy Sportz is designed to be appropriate for all ages.
