The 353,000-square-foot building houses more than 2.4 million items, including books, DVDs, music, government documents, and other items. There are more than 300 computers available for public use, and a large collection of children's books with books in 30 different languages. The library offers free classes on computers and technology (listed here: http://www.hclib.org/pub/events/AllEventsAction.cfm?brand=learntech&agency=ce). 

The Minneapolis Central Library opened on May 20, 2006. It was designed by César Pelli, the renowned Argentine-American architect. 

In 2008, all libraries in the Minneapolis Public Library system, including the Minneapolis Central Library, merged with the Hennepin County Library system.
