BALDWIN, PTE  LOUIS

Louis Baldwin born 1920, son of Albert and Matilda (Lanz) Baldwin who built and operated Edgewood Inn on Wahwashkesh Lake married Muriel Lloyd. They had four children: Doreen, Donna, Barbara and Connie. (When Louis first came back from WWII, he and Muriel lived on Highway 520, just past Auld’s Road. They later moved to Chalk River.)

Louis Baldwin enlisted at North Bay on 20 May 1941 and was attached to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps.  His military service for Canada ended February 1, 1946 just shy of 5 years.

In February 1945, Louis was attached to the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles, New Brunswick and a month later disembarked to the U.K.   His service overseas lasted nine months, leaving the UK for Hamilton, Ontario on 4 December 1945.  He safely returned home.

Donna Crabbe, Louis’ daughter, notes: “No doubt he was older and wiser as the saying goes, when he returned to Whitestone upon his release.   Among other trials, there was separation from a new bride to deal with plus my older sister and I were both born during times when dad was absent, and thus I feel both Dad and Mom (Muriel Lloyd) served Canada, along with all those who had to fill the gaps and mourn the losses.”
