BARNES, WILFRED SGT.
Wilfred Barnes was born February 6, 1923 in Sundridge, the son of Henry Barnes and Lucy Sturch, Wilfred married Shirley Elizabeth Smith in June 1945 in Winnipeg. They had seven children, the first of whom was born in Petersburg, Ontario.
Died Nov. 13, 1979 in Petersburg. Wilfred is buried in New Dundee..
At time of writing, it is understood that Sergeant Wilfred Henry Barnes enlisted in 1941 in the RCAF.
It would also appear that he was shot down over Europe on or about April 15, 1943.
Based upon the pictures below it would appear that Wilfred was part of bomber crew.
Wilfred wrote at the top left of the picture at right: “This picture was carried by me on all my flying operations in my battle dress tunic pocket and on my person during 17 months as a POW commenced aprox. 15 April 1943. Stopped carrying it approx.. 15 June 1945.
Unfortunately we do not know which of the pictures on the preceding page or other picture he was referring to.
At the bottom of the page he wrote: “The above snaps were taken at the city of Frankfurt on Maine after completing interrogation, 19, 01,1944”
