BLACKBURN, PTE./SAPPER ROY Reg # 208099 and Reg, # 208099
The only Roy Blackburn appears to be a Myer Roy Blackburn, Reg # 208099 who enlisted at Windsor, Ontario
But, censuses, voters lists and Ancestry trees do not show a connection of any Roy Blackburn and the Magnetawan area.
Must await some other verification that this is not an error.
However, in the interim, the file of Myer Roy Blackburn is included.
Myron Melroy ‘Roy’ Kendall was born March 4, 1896 in Lambton, Ontario, the son of Albert E. Kendall and Lydia Bell Blackburn. Or Martha Blackburn.
His date of birth was given as March 14, 1892 in Detroit – and he indicated that he lived in Detroit at the time of signing. He further identified that he was a machinist and that his next of kin was his mother Martha.
However, in his file, there is the note, shown at right, identifying that his name should read Roy Kendall.
Roy’s file, under the name Blackburn is only 15 pages including file folders. The key elements are below:
The file begins with the same Attestation papers. The file is 86 pages long. While, as noted, it includes the Attestation paper noted above, it also includes an Attestation paper identifying his date of birth as March 4, 1896 in Huron County, his occupation as a farmer and his father as Albert Kendall.
The answer to the apparent double identity can be found on the 8th page of the file in which it is noted that Myron Roy Kendall, Pte, Battalion deserted in 1915 and re-enlisted in the 4th Pioneers.
He is identified as having served in France with the Canadian Railway Troops.
He was discharged March 1, 1919.
Roy died May 1, 1938 in London according to Military Files.
Roy’s story is presented in part at left which identified as that he was gassed December 20, 1917.
Family records provide an interesting record showing that Roy married possible 4 times:
Margaret ‘Maggie’ Alice Hornick September 9, 1914 in Dresden , Kent Counnty, Ontario.
He apparently had 2 daughters with Maggie: Opal, born in 1915; and Margaret Alice born in 1919.
Rebecca Rosa Williams on December 2, 1915 – groom identified as a soldier
Josie May Ashton on December 24, 1924 – groom identified as a machinist
Margaret Louise Bateman December 19, 1933 – groom identified as a ‘Gentleman’, divorced.
Roy died May 1, 1938 in Dresden. His death notice identified that he had been a soldier, invalided since the war.
