BRODERICK, PTE. FRANK Reg. # 505853

Francis ‘Frank’ Robert Broderick was born October 15, 1873 in Mulmer Twp., Ontario, the son of William Broderick and Anne Jane Mortimer.

At the time of the 1881 and 1891 censuses the Broderick family including Frank was identified as living in the Croft Township.

By the time of the 1911 census, Frank was identified as living with his brother and family in Willow Sale, Central, Alberta.

When Frank Broderick enlisted on July 31, 1916 he identified his father as being William Broderick, presently of Canmore, Alberta. Frank was identified as being in the Canadian Engineers. At the time of enlistment he was living in Esquilmont and was identified as a harness maker and driver.

As noted, at the time of the 1891 census, William Broderick age 52 and his wife Ann Jane age 46 were identified as living in Croft Township with children including Francis Robert age 18 and Gideon, age 8 months.

In his Discharge Certificate, Frank is identified as having enlisted on July 31, 1916 in Victoria, B.C.  and to have served in England.

He was discharged on August 1, 1919 as medically unfit.

Frank embarked for England on May 5, 1917 arriving in England on May 14.

In April he was assigned to the CERD (Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Depot - centre from which reinforcements were allocated to existing engineering units)

He was T.O.S. (Taken on Strength)  to the 3RD CCD (This could mean Canadian Command Depot; the Canadian Convalescent Depot - facility where soldiers could recover from wounds and rebuild their strength; or the Canadian Corps Depot) . In April of 1918 he was ‘discharged’ from the 3rd C.C.D. and transferred to the C.A.M.C. Depot in Thorncliffe (Canadian Army Medical Corps - corps of military doctors, nursing sisters and other personnel providing medical treatment to soldiers).

Franks medical problem would appear to date back to a wrist injury received on December 20, 1917 while stationed in England.

The wrist does not appear to have healed fully leaving Frank with a permanent impairment.

Frank Broderick died May 17, 1936 in Princeton, British Columbia. There is no record that he married or had family.
