GALVIN, ROBERT
Bob Galvin is the grandson of Marion (Clelland) Badendick. Marion was the daughter of James and Matilda (Dobbs) Clelland of Maple Island.
Bob lived on his great-grandparents farm on Clelland Road between 1952 and 1954. In August of 1954, Bob enlisted in the R.C.A.F. at Fort William (present day Thunder Bay). Bob took his basic training at St. Jean, Quebec and then went to Clinton, Ontario to the R.C.A.F. electronics school there. After spending 15 months at Edgar, Ontario Bob was assigned to Cold Lake Alberta from 1956 to 1959. It was while at Cold Lake that Bob met his future wife and, as he jokes, he got both his pilot’s licence and a marriage licence.
After Cold Lake Bob went to C.F.B. Bagotville, Quebec where three of the couple’s children were born. The family then returned to C.F.B. Clinton for further electronic training. It was at Clinton where the couple’s fourth child was born.
Bob ended his service at Greenwood, Nova Scotia where he was an Argus Flight Simulator Technician.
Two of Bob’s sons and two of his grandchildren have served/serve with the R.C.A.F. -– 3 generations have served at Cold Lake. Of note, Bob’s father Stanforth Galvin was also in the R.C.A.F. He died Dec. 18, 1944 in an aircraft accident in England. Sergeant Stanforth Galvin was an air gunner.
