GILEWICZ, JOHN PAUL
John Paul Gilewicz was born May 3, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey and died June 4, 1980 in Erie County, Pennsylvania. John was a cottager in this area and is buried in Whitestone Cemetery.
John was in the United States Navy and served as an AERM 2 in WWII. An Aerographer's Mate (AERM) is the Navy's own weather forecaster. Aerographer's Mates are trained in the science of meteorology and physical oceanography; the Navy's meteorological and oceanographic experts. Aerographer's mates observe, collect, record and analyze meteorological and oceanographic data; make visual and instrument observations of weather and sea conditions surface and sub-surface; interpret and brief radar imagery and data; and prepare warnings of severe and hazardous weather and sea conditions amongst other things.
