JONES, GEORGE
George Jones enlisted on November 6, 1956 in Toronto and spent 5 years with the RCN (Royal Canadian Navy). He took his basic training at Cornwallis, and after further training in Ottawa as a radio operator, he was assigned to Aklavik, Northwest Territories where he spent 2 years and 3 months during the ‘Cold War’. He worked in an ‘Intercept Station’ at Aklavik that monitored radio communications including Russian activity, and other communications including vessels in distress. After his term in Aklavik, which George indicates he truly enjoyed and would have stayed longer, he returned to Ottawa.
