MACFIE, JAMES MALCOLM

James Malcolm ‘Jim’ Macfie was born at Sunny Slope, the son of Donald ‘Roy’ and Edith (Mitchell) Macfie.

James enlisted in 1944 and was still serving in the 1970’s. His service included:  Army, No. 1, R.C.H.A. Paratrooper, Army Pilot and instructor, 1967-1968, a Canadian Delegate on the International Control Mission in Vietnam; Helicopter pilot, 427 Squadron, Mobile Command, Canada, Germany (NATO), Viet Nam, Canada.

As noted, after the war, Jim stayed in the forces. He was initially transferred to Shilo, Manitoba as a gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery. Jim rose through the ranks to become Captain. Along the way he trained as a paratrooper and as a pilot of both fixed-wing and helicopters. When he served on the International Control Commission in Viet Nam, Jim was jailed in Hanoi, accused of being an American spy.
