SCHADE , PTE OSCAR A Reg. # 850213 (176th Battalion CEF)
George Stewart ‘Oscar Alfred’ Schade was born April 15, 1893 in Magnetawan, the son of John Schade and Barbara Shmermund.
At the time of the 1901 census the family was identified as living in Chapman Township and at the time of the 1911 census as living on 6 Biddy Street in Magnetawan.
Oscar enlisted February 2, 1916 at Thorold. He identified that he was a fireman.
On February 15, 1921 he married Cora Martha Louisa Wurm at Burks Falls. At the time of the 1921 census Oscar and Cora were identified as living in Magnetawan.
In his Discharge Certificate dated November 4, 1918 Oscar was identified as being medically unfit for further War service.
Oscar arrived in England on July 25, 1916 on the S.S. Lapland.
In October he was transferred to the 21st Battalion form the 98th Battalion.
On January 18, 1917 he was dangerously wounded and hospitalized.
Oscar’s injuries were caused by machine gun fire that severely damaged his leg.
Oscar was invalided to Canada in March of 1918.
