TROYER, CAPTAIN SUTHERLAND HENDERSON Reg. #669839

Sutherland Henderson Troyer was born December 16, 1890 in Hensall, Ontario, the son of James Edmond Troyer and Sarah Ann Hudson.

The family was shown as remaining in Hensall at the time of the 1901 census.

Sutherland appears to have eluded the 1911 census, but anecdotal evidence suggests that he came north to the Magnetawan area with his brother J. Wilfred Troyer. In fact, in the imitable style of transcribers, Henderson Troyer (transcribed as Broyard)  does appear in the 1911 census, living in Chapman Township with his brother and sister-in-law Wilford and Matilda on Spark Street. His brother was identified as a merchant. Henderson was identified as a barber. (Living with the Troyers as a lodger was John Blezzard.)

In his Attestation papers signed February 23, 1916 Sutherland Henderson identified that he was living in Toronto. He identified that his mother Sarah Ann Troyer lived in Seaforth. He identified his occupation as a clerk.

However, in other documentation he identified his most recent address as Magnetawan.

Troyer indicated that he had served in the 33rd Hurons militia for one year as a Private. In the Military record summary, Sutherland Henderson Troyer is identified as having enlisted February 23, 1916 in Toronto with the Queens Own Rifles, 166th Overseas Battalion.

In his Discharge Certificate Acting Sergeant Sutherland Henderson Troyer is having enlisted in the 166th on February 23, 1916 in Toronto and to have served in England and France.

He is identified as having received a gunshot wound on his left leg January 11, 1917.

Sutherland arrived in England on October 19, 1916 on the S.S. Olympic.

In October he was identified as ‘to be Acting Lance Corporal with the 166th.

In late October he was admitted to hospital with bronchitis.

In January 1917 he was transferred to the 12th Reserve Battalion and later to the 13th Battalion overseas. In March he was confirmed as lance Corporal.
