He is identified as having served with the C.M.G.C. in France and Belgium.

He transferred from the 8th Reserve Battalion to the Canadian Machine Gun Depot in May.
He arrived in France on August 22, 1918.
He was posted to the 4th Battalion of the CMGC.
On September 28, 1918 he received a gunshot wound to his ankle.
The injury kept William out of commission for the duration of the war.
