The Woodland City Cemetery is bounded on its north and east sides by West Cross Street and West Street, respectively, bounded on its south side by St. Joseph's Cemetery, and bounded on its west side by a row of houses that face California Street. It is located north of West Southwood Drive.
In 1856, a brick building was built to house the Union Church at the site of what is now the Woodland City Cemetery.1 A small cemetery was installed adjacent to the Union Church, for the church's use. In 1869, the Woodland Cemetery Association was founded and purchased 10 acres of land adjacent to the Union Church cemetery. In 1967, the City of Woodland assumed ownership of the Woodland City Cemetery.2 At some point, the Union Church was demolished, and the Woodland City Cemetery acquired adjacent land.
The Woodland City Cemetery has been planted with trees by the city. The trees include six invasive weed species: Glossy Privet (Ligustrum lucidum), European Olive (Olea europaea), Canary Island Palm (Phoenix canariensis), Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia 'Purple Robe'), Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica sebifera), and Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta). However, they also include one species native to Woodland: Valley Oak (Quercus lobata). Additionally, they include three species native to other parts of California: Modesto Ash/Arizona Ash (Fraxinus velutina), Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), and California Fan Palm. Other non-native trees at the cemetery include Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo), Bottle Tree (Brachychiton populneus), European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata'), River Sheoak (Casuarina cunninghamiana), Western Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa), Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara), Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), Carob (Ceratonia siliqua), Lemon (Citrus × limon), Sweet Orange (Citrus × sinensis), English Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata), Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), White Ash (Fraxinus americana), Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba), Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus), Eastern Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), Goldenrain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), Fruitless Mulberry (Morus alba), Austrian Black Pine (Pinus nigra), Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii), Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis), London Plane (Platanus × hispanica), Purple-leaf Plumcot (Prunus × blireiana), Scarlet Oak (Quercus coccinea), English Columnar White Oak (Quercus robur 'Fastigiata'), Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra), Cork Oak (Quercus suber), Little-leaf Linden (Tilia cordata), American Elm (Ulmus americana), and Saw-leaf Zelkova (Zelkova serrata 'Wireless').
