Southfield Road starts at West Jefferson Avenue in Ecorse and heads west-northwestward, becoming a boulevard at Fort Street in Downtown Lincoln Park and then two blocks later picking up the M-39 designation at Lafayette Boulevard, the first traffic light east of Interstate 75. Southfield Road continues into Allen Park, at Interstate 94 it turns north-northeastward and becomes the Southfield Freeway before ending back up as a north-south arterial road (and losing the M-39 designation with it) in the namesake city of Southfield. Southfield Road continues north to end at Maple Road in Birmingham.
