Taylor (population 63,131) is the largest city Downriver based on both population and size. Centrally located, the boundaries are formed by Van Born Road to the north, Pelham Road and Allen Road to the east, Pennsylvania Road to the south, and Inkster Road to the west. Major thoroughfares include Ecorse Road, Wick Road, Goddard Road, Eureka Road, and Telegraph Road. Interstate 75 and Interstate 94 also pass through the city. The current mayor is Rick Sollars.
The area comprising Taylor was initially part of Ecorse Township when land surveys were completed in 1827. People who located in this area throughout the 1830s complained that their homes were too far from either stores or central government offices. Taylor Township (named after the war general and future U.S. President, Zachary Taylor) was then formed by 1841; it was the first of a series of secessions from Ecorse Township.
Taylor became a city by voter referendum in 1968. The city is home to Southland Center, Heritage Park (Downriver's largest) and its largest business contributor, Masco Industries. Taylor was also the site for the first Hungry Howie's Pizza location which opened in 1973.
