The Appeal-Democrat is the major newspaper of the Yuba-Sutter area. Printed in Marysville, it is a daily broadsheet with a daily circulation of 17,676 copies and a Sunday circulation of 18,306 copies.1 It is sold in Butte County and Colusa County in addition to Yuba and Sutter counties. It employs a staff of about 100 people.
History
The Appeal-Democrat was established in 1926 from the merger of two earlier newspapers, the Marysville Appeal (established in 1860) and the Marysville Evening Democrat (established in 1884). It was purchased by Freedom Communications in 1946. It moved its headquarters to new buildings in 1950 and 1956, but always remained in Marysville—even as neighboring Yuba City gradually became significantly more populated than Marysville.2
Editor Len La Barth took over leadership of the Appeal-Democrat in September 2006, after having previously served as Web editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel.3
