The plant life is dominated by blue oaks, gray pines, buckbrush, and poison oak. Many of the native amphibians, birds, insects, mammals, and reptiles of the Yuba-Sutter area live there. Beware of rattlesnakes and ticks.
Hunting is allowed within designated areas and times of year. Overnight parking is allowed, but camping is not allowed. However, visitors may camp at the nearby Collins Lake Recreation Area.
Horseback riding and bicycling are allowed only in the Daugherty Hill Unit, and only at designated times of year.
