KUBA-AM 1600 began independent broadcasting from Marysville in 1948. It broadcast at 500 watts until 1949, when the power was increased to 1,000 watts. In 1950, the studio was moved to the Hotel Marysville and acquired a dual-tower directional antenna system. In 1961, the power was increased to 5,000 watts, the level it has maintained ever since. The studio moved to 4th Street, Marysville, in 1963 and then to its current location in the early 1970s. KUBA was purchased by the Harlan family in 1983 and went through several format changes, including country music, "America's Best Music," and its current format. Its ownership merged with Nevada County Broadcasters, Inc., in 2004. In 2008, KUBA added a simulcast on FM 95.5.
