Plumas National Forest is a 1,146,000-acre forest in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. It includes Strawberry Valley, Eagleville, and North Star in Yuba County, and some of the land in the Challenge area, as well as portions of Butte County, Plumas County, Sierra County, and Lassen County. About 85% of it is in Plumas County. The Plumas National Forest supervisor's office is in Quincy, the county seat of Plumas County. There is a visitor center in Challenge.
A 2002 study by the Forest Service identified 127,000 acres of the forest as old growth. The forest is full of popular locations for camping and hiking.
