Its highest point is Mount Whitney (in Inyo County). Mount Whitney is 14,505 feet high and located partially within Sequoia National Park.

The northeastern portion of Yuba County extends partway up the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. The highest point in Yuba County is Sugar Pine Peak, which has an elevation of 4,825 feet; it is located northeast of North Star. All areas of Yuba County above approximately 1,600 feet—including Brownsville, Camptonville, Challenge, Dobbins, and Strawberry Valley—belong to the Yellow Pine Forest plant community.
